The diversity leaderboards celebrate two co-equal kinds of diversity, ranked on separate boards so neither is buried under the other's metric:

Volume diversity (contribution at scale): An operator running hundreds of relays on a non-dominant platform (e.g. 300 FreeBSD relays) or outside the EU pours real capacity into the underrepresented side of the network. Scale is the point. Measured by relay count (💻 Non-Linux Powerhouses, 🌍 Global Powerhouses).
Breadth diversity (internal spread): An operator running many different operating systems or spanning many countries is diverse within their own fleet — no single kernel vulnerability or legal action can take it all down at once. Variety is the point. Measured by distinct count (🧩 OS Polyglots, 🧭 Jurisdiction Globetrotters, 🏴‍☠️ Frontier Builders).

Each board ranks by its own primary metric and uses the other kind's metric only as a tiebreaker; both numbers are always displayed together. The 🧩 OS Polyglots board counts all operating systems including Linux and only lists operators running 2 or more distinct OSes.

Validation Score Calculation: The AROI Validation Champions category measures operator commitment to verified identity and accountability by counting relays with valid AROI cryptographic proofs.

Eligibility: All operators with at least one relay that has valid AROI proof (DNS-RSA or URI-RSA)

🌈 Diversity All-Rounders Scoring (Diversity Index):

Diversity Index Calculation: The Diversity Index (0–100) is the average of four co-equal 0–100 sub-scores. Each sub-score combines a breadth half (distinct counts, linear ramp) and a volume half (relay counts, logarithmic ramp so raw size can't dominate):

Geographic: ½ × (distinct countries ÷ geo yardstick) + ½ × log-ramp(non-EU relays vs volume yardstick)
Platform: ½ × (distinct OSes incl. Linux − 1, ÷ OS yardstick) + ½ × log-ramp(non-Linux relays vs volume yardstick)
Network: ½ × (unique ASes ÷ AS yardstick) + ½ × log-ramp(AS rarity sum vs volume yardstick)
Scale: log-ramp(diverse relays vs volume yardstick). A diverse relay is one differing from the operator's most-common OS, country, or AS — the relays adding spread beyond the main deployment. A perfect monoculture scores 0 regardless of fleet size.

Network-adaptive yardsticks (no fixed magic numbers): every yardstick is recomputed from the live network each update — geo: 10% of countries hosting relays; OS: the most OSes any single operator runs; AS: 1% of ASes hosting relays; all volume yardsticks: the 5th-highest operator value ("top-5 cohort"). "100" always means "matches today's network leaders/structure", and the bar moves as the network evolves.

Index Formula: diversity_index = (geographic + platform + network + scale) / 4

Example: An operator with 14 countries, 6 OSes, 10 rare ASes and 15 of 15 relays off their dominant profile scores roughly geo 80 + platform 67 + network 90 + scale 75 → Index 78.

Network Component — AS rarity scoring (0–5 per AS):

Base (0–3) — Consensus Weight: How much of the network's authority does this AS hold? Dominant ≥5% CW = 0 pts; Major 0.5–5% = 1 pt; Moderate 0.05–0.5% = 2 pts; Small <0.05% = 3 pts
Bonus (0–2) — Operator Count: How many distinct operators share this AS? Popular (10+) = 0 pts; Few (2–10) = +1 pt; Sole operator = +2 pts

AS Rarity Tiers: Legendary (4–5): minimal footprint, sole/few operators; Epic (3): small provider or moderate with few operators; Rare (2): moderate provider; Emerging (1): major provider; Common (0): dominant providers like OVH and Hetzner.

Focus: Rewards true all-rounders — operators diverse on every dimension and at meaningful scale — instead of letting one dimension (e.g. country count) drown the rest.

Primary metric: count of non-Linux relays contributed to the network. Tiebreakers: distinct OS count, then bandwidth. Eligibility: all operators.

Example: 633 FreeBSD relays ranks above 32 FreeBSD relays, regardless of how many OSes either operator runs — this board rewards shifting Tor away from a Linux monoculture at scale.

🧩 OS Polyglots Scoring (Platform Breadth):

Primary metric: count of distinct operating systems including Linux across the operator's fleet. Tiebreakers: non-Linux relay count, then bandwidth. Eligibility: 2+ distinct OSes.

Example: 6 OSes on 15 relays (Linux, FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, DragonFly, SunOS) ranks above 2 OSes on 1,000 relays — this board rewards fleets that are diverse within themselves, resilient to any single kernel vulnerability.

🌍 Global Powerhouses Scoring (Non-EU Volume):

Primary metric: count of relays operated outside the European Union. Tiebreakers: distinct non-EU country count, then bandwidth. Eligibility: all operators.

Example: 1,000 relays in 2 non-EU countries ranks above 100 relays in 10 non-EU countries — this board rewards expanding Tor capacity beyond EU concentration at scale.

🧭 Jurisdiction Globetrotters Scoring (Non-EU Breadth):

Primary metric: count of distinct non-EU countries with relay presence. Tiebreakers: non-EU relay count, then bandwidth. Eligibility: all operators.

Example: 15 relays across 14 non-EU countries ranks above 1,000 relays in 2 non-EU countries — this board rewards spreading across many legal jurisdictions so no single legal action can reach the whole fleet.

🏴‍☠️ Frontier Builder Scoring:

Rare Country Score Calculation: The rare country score sums up points from all countries where an operator runs relays using a weighted scoring system:

Relay Count Factor (4x weight): Countries with fewer relays receive higher scores (6 points for 1 relay, 5 points for 2 relays, down to 0 points for 7+ relays)
Network Percentage Factor (3x weight): Countries representing smaller portions of the network score higher (6 points for <0.05%, 4 points for 0.05-0.1%, 2 points for 0.1-0.2%)
Geopolitical Factor (2x weight): Strategic importance based on conflict zones (3 points), authoritarian regimes (3 points), island nations (2 points), and developing countries (1-2 points)
Regional Factor (1x weight): Underrepresented regions like Africa, Central Asia, and Pacific Islands (2 points) or emerging regions (1 point)

Operator Scoring: Each operator's rare country score is the sum of points from all countries where they operate relays.

Example: An operator with 2 relays in Mongolia (44 points) and 1 relay in Malta (20 points) would score: 44 + 20 = 64 total rare country points.

🏆 Network Veterans Scoring:

Veteran Score Calculation: The veteran score recognizes operators with the longest continuous service to the Tor network using earliest first seen time weighted by operational scale:

Primary Factor - Earliest First Seen Time: Days between earliest relay's first_seen date and current date (primary ranking factor)
Secondary Factor - Relay Scale Multiplier: Tiered scaling from 1.0x to 1.3x based on total relay count (tiebreaker for similar veterans)

Micro Operators (1-9 relays): 1.0x scaling factor (no bonus)
Large Operators (100+ relays): 1.2x scaling factor (20% bonus for sustained commitment)
Top Tier Operators (300+ relays): 1.3x scaling factor (30% bonus for major operations)

Veteran Formula: veteran_score = veteran_days × veteran_relay_scaling_factor

Example: An operator running relays since 2010 (5,000 days) with 150 relays would score: 5,000 × 1.2 = 6,000 veteran points, potentially beating a smaller operator from 2009 (5,453 days) who scores 5,453 × 1.0 = 5,453 points.
